Huabei Pharmaceutical Factory was established in 1953. It is one of the key industrial construction projects of New China 156, and the first large-scale joint venture to produce antibiotics in China aided by the Soviet Union. It was once the largest antibiotic manufacturer in Asia, and independently cultivated the first penicillin strain for production, ending the history of penicillin and streptomycin dependence on imports in China.
