Guan Yu (nicknamed Beard, about 158- 167 -220) and Xie Xianren of Hedong County (now Yuncheng, Shanxi Province) were honored as "Martial Sage" by later generations, just like "Wen Sheng" Confucius.
Guan Yu followed Liu Bei in his early days. After Battle of Red Cliffs was appointed as the prefect of Xiangyang by Liu Bei, Liu Bei entered Yizhou and Guan Yu stayed in Jingzhou.
In 2 19, Guan Yu surrounded Xiangfan, and Cao Cao sent reinforcements. Guan Yu captured Yu Jin alive and killed Pound, which greatly shocked China. Later, Cao Cao sent Huang Xu to reinforce, and Soochow Monroe attacked Jingzhou. Guan Yu was caught between Scylla and Charybdis, captured by Pan Zhang and killed in Linzhou. Liu Chan, the ruler in the last years of Shu and Han Dynasties, called him "Queen Zhuang" after his death.
