What was the shield of the Three Kingdoms period made of?
Since the Spring and Autumn Period, the shields used in actual combat in China are mostly wooden/leather/patent leather composite shields, while the shields made of copper and iron are seldom used. For example, at the end of the Qin Dynasty and the beginning of the Han Dynasty, Fan Kuai once held an iron shield at the Hongmen banquet. But it is still more limited to ceremonies and other purposes, because it is too heavy.

When quoting Sima Qian's Historical Records (Volume 95) and Biography of Fan Liteng (Volume 35), Pei Gonghe was sitting alone. Fan Kuai was outside the camp, and when he heard something urgent, he entered the camp with an iron shield. The camp guards stopped, plunged in and set up an account.

Then, like the 1994 version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms filmed in China, the shield used is made of asphalt cloth and resin, which looks rough at close range, but looks like an iron shield. This is not true.

During the Three Kingdoms period, the method of shield making continued in the Spring and Autumn Period, Qin and Han Dynasties, including shield nose and shield tile. But compared with the shield, its shape and production style make me prefer to call it the roof. ...

As for materials, temporary wooden shields are made of miscellaneous materials, because there is no high expectation for the service life of the shield itself. And some well-made small and medium-sized wooden shields are mostly made of high-density materials such as oak. Leather shield is just a kind of cowhide, because pigskin is too rotten and sheepskin is too thin.
