The ancient Hiran Hospital was used as the examination room.

Gongyuan was first established in the Tang Dynasty. In ancient times, all the items given to the emperor were called tributes, and only "Gong Yuan" contributed talents. Therefore, Hiran College means to select talents through examinations and make contributions to the emperor or the country. There are Jiangnan Gongyuan, Beijing Gong Yuan, Dingzhou Gong Yuan, North Sichuan Gong Yuan and other places, among which Nanjing Jiangnan Gongyuan is the most famous as the largest imperial examination room in ancient China.

Mingyuan Garden is built in Hiram's Hospital for invigilators and other officials to prevent candidates and officials from cheating. A row of numbered rooms is where candidates answer questions. There are foot soldiers in the examination room who act as servants to draw water and make a fire, which is called the No.1 Army. An officer is in charge of the chores of 20 candidates. After being searched, the examinee enters room 1 with Four Treasures of the Study, bedding and food. Sitting, writing, eating and convenience are all in this small world.

In ancient China, on the day of the imperial examination, candidates would wait in the imperial examination hall and take their seats according to the regulations. They will finish the paper within the specified time, which usually includes classical Chinese reading, poetry composition and historical answers. After the exam, the papers will be collected and sent to the examiner for marking.
