This book consists of six different but internally related themes: starting with "various factors of the changes of the times" and ending with "Rebuilding humanistic values and social ethics". Four themes are discussed in the middle, namely "China's transformation in the Ming and Qing Dynasties", "intellectuals in modern China", "Changes in Taiwan Province Province in the past hundred years" and "Evolution of modern capitalism and socialism". In the discussion, the author gives full play to many small topics, such as "Early Death of Enlightenment", "Intellectuals and Education" and "Three Historical Stages of Taiwan Province Province", which reflects Mr. Xu Zhuoyun's consistent view of cultural China and his confidence in rebuilding the universal values of mankind.
About the author:
Xu Zhuoyun, male, 1930, from Wuxi, Jiangsu. An internationally renowned historian, Ph.D., University of Chicago, USA, Honorary Doctor, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Academician of Taipei Academia Sinica. He has taught at Taiwan Province Provincial University and University of Pittsburgh in the United States, during which he was employed as a chair professor at Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Hawaii, Duke University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
