Ordinary British people think so. The early history of Britain is a history of oppression and tear in which the British Island was constantly squeezed, invaded and conquered by powerful European nations and regimes. For example, Caesar defeated the Celts, the Anglo-Saxons destroyed Rome and Britain, and the Vikings and Normans conquered England. Then, in order to obtain rich and fertile land in France, the British monarch continued to fight against the French king. It was the king of England who conquered Wales, Ireland and Glen.
