Huangpu school has a long history. Its predecessor was the Biwen Girls' School founded by Mrs. Elijah Coleman Bridgman, the pastor of the Anglican Church in the United States, on 1850 (13th year of Qing Daoguang). It is the first women's church school in Shanghai. After liberation, it was renamed Biwen Girls' Middle School and Shanghai No.9 Middle School. Huangpu School is the former site of Shanghai Hainan Gymnasium. Its predecessor was Shanghai Public Stadium, which was built in 19 17. It is the earliest public stadium built by China people in China. It has a glorious revolutionary history and tradition and is a patriotic education base in this region. It has been listed as a municipal cultural relics protection unit and a revolutionary memorial site. The well-known "May 4th Movement" originated from the playground of Huangpu School.
