Kelpolo, a famous Italian traveler, has been an official for 17 years and often goes to neighboring countries and travels all over the country. In the 27th year of Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 192 1), she was ordered by Kublai Khan to escort Princess Kekeqing to marry in Persia and return home from Houzhu Port in Quanzhou. After returning home, he wrote about The Travels of Marco Polo, introducing oriental culture to the western world, which caused great repercussions. Quanzhou is one of the important cities he introduced in this travel book. Kelpolo's trip started from Hangzhou, entered Fujian via Xinzhou (Shangrao, Jiangxi), and then arrived in Quanzhou from Geling (Jianning), Wugan (Youxi) and Weng 'an (Yongchun). At this time, Quanzhou was in the heyday of foreign trade, foreign businessmen, missionaries and travelers came in droves, and merchant ships from Asian and African countries frequently came in and out, which was a scene of prosperity. Kyle Poirot said that the pepper carried in Alexandria, Egypt, is only transported by one ship at a time in ordinary countries, and more than 10 thousand ships are as prosperous as Alexandria! Quanzhou's Tatung Satin sells well in Southeast Asia, India and Europe. Di Yun (Dehua) made many bowls and porcelains, which were very beautiful. Quanzhou's foreign trade is very profitable, and the government can get huge taxes, which is one of the important sources of treasury revenue in the Yuan Dynasty. At that time, paper money was still used in Quanzhou and other places, and paper money was an important circulation medium.
Kelpolo also noted that Quanzhou Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and other three major religions in the world are very popular. What people see among the people are mostly "idolaters", which probably refers to Buddhism. This coincides with Quanzhou's ancient name "Quannan Buddha Country".
Kelpolo was deeply impressed by Wen Gan (Yongchun) and Di Yun (Dehua). He said that Yongchun "made a lot of sugar", which not only supplied local residents, but also shipped it to Hanbali (Beijing) for "supply". It can be seen that the sugar industry in Yongchun was quite developed at that time. In Dehua, Kyle Poirot noticed that only local people could understand the popular dialects there. Although it can be understood in words, it is full of mystery to outsiders.
After leaving Quanzhou, Kelpolo went through hardships and drifted for more than two years before reaching his destination-Persia, and then arrived in Venice, Italy in the first year of Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 1295) by sea and land.
