What is a "golden nail"?

The International Union of Geological Sciences held in Argentina confirmed that the section of Jingshan Park in Changxing, Zhejiang, China is the symbol of the boundary between Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata-the "golden nail". Academician Yin Hongfu of China Geo University explained this.

Stratigraphic age is divided into pre-Paleozoic, Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Each border is divided into several departments. Inter-departmental global standards are commonly known as "golden nails". Obviously, there is more than one "golden nail", but the size is different and the priority is different. Permian is the last system of Paleozoic, and Triassic is the earliest system of Mesozoic. Therefore, the "golden nail" in Zhejiang Jingshan Park is not only a sign of the boundary between Permian and Triassic, but also a sign of the boundary between Mesozoic and Paleozoic. It is considered as one of the three golden nails in geological history. ...

"Why not call it a gold nail and a silver nail?" "Golden Nail" is the name of the International Stratigraphic Commission. Gold is precious, which means it is important. After the nail is nailed, it is fixed, which means it is a permanent symbol. In addition, there are also established elements in the international geological community.

Biology is the most sensitive material form reflecting geological history. The best way to understand the earth is to study the biological fossils of various historical periods. Different fossils have become the symbol of dividing different eras. For more than a hundred years, scientists have been trying to determine the dividing line between different eras, but so far, only about half of the eras have their own "golden nails", and the amazing dividing line between Paleozoic and Mesozoic is still controversial. And the establishment of this border is of great significance to us human beings.

The Paleozoic began 540 million years ago and ended 250 million years ago. Paleozoic fauna is mainly composed of trilobites, mollusks and brachiopods among invertebrates. At the end of Paleozoic, the earth experienced a "catastrophe group" including the great global return, and 90% of the species became extinct. The Mesozoic began 250 million years ago and ended 67 million years ago. Also known as the reptile age, the ammonite age and the gymnosperms age. The crustal movement in the late Mesozoic had a great influence on the evolution of animals, and animal species such as dinosaurs tended to become extinct.

For the division of Paleozoic and Mesozoic, 100 years, geologists have been marked by ammonite fossils, but due to the limitation of ammonite distribution, they cannot fully explain the global geological phenomenon.

1986, Academician Yin Hongfu proposed that the conodont fossils discovered by Chinese geologists in Jingshan Park, Changxing, Zhejiang Province be used as the standard fossils to divide Paleozoic and Mesozoic, and the boundary between Paleozoic and Mesozoic was determined. Once this novel idea was put forward, it aroused strong repercussions in the geological community and even met with opposition from some people.

In scientific research, it is normal for a theory to cause controversy. China scientists adopt opening to the outside world and absorb international counterparts; Together with researchers from Nanjing Institute of Paleontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, we spent nearly 10 years in Jingshan Park, Zhejiang Province, and achieved fruitful results. They found a large number of animal carcass fossils left by disasters such as global return, which reflected the tragic scene of global animal extinction at that time.

From 65438 to 0996, nine scientists from China, the United States, Russia and Germany jointly published articles in international journals, recommending conodont fossils from Jingshan Park, Changxing, Zhejiang, China as standard fossils for dividing Paleozoic and Mesozoic. Since then, after three rounds of voting by international academic organizations, Jingshan Park was finally recognized by the International Union of Geological Sciences, and its geological "golden nail" status was confirmed.
