Baoshan, formerly known as Yongchang, is located in the southwest of Yunnan Province. The seat of the municipal government is 486 kilometers away from Kunming, the provincial capital, and is connected with the mountains and rivers of Myanmar. The border line is167.78km long, and it is adjacent to Dali, Lincang, Nujiang and Dehong, with a land area of19637km2. It has jurisdiction over Longyang, Shidian, Tengchong, Longling and Changning, with a total population of 2.468 million, including 13 indigenous minorities, 240,000 ethnic minorities and 289,000 overseas Chinese, their relatives and returned overseas Chinese. Baoshan is one of the earliest developed areas in Yunnan history. 2 1 century BC, Baoshan ancestors established a country of prisoners here. Buwei County was established in the Western Han Dynasty, and Yongchang County was established in Yongping in the Eastern Han Dynasty 12 (AD 69), making it the second largest county in China at that time. It is the hub of the famous "Southern Silk Road" in ancient times, an important land connection point from China to South Asia and Southeast Asia, and a distribution center of China-Myanmar trade in past dynasties. This ancient and magical land gave birth to Lu Kai, the magistrate of Shu-Han and Dian-County, Wang Hongzhuo, the three "kings" in the Qing Dynasty, Du Wenxiu, the leader of the Hui uprising in the late Qing Dynasty, the veteran of the Revolution of 1911, Li Genyuan, the acting prime minister of Beiyang government, and Ai Siqi, a contemporary Marxist philosopher.
The annual average temperature in Baoshan is 14.9℃- 17℃, with no severe cold in winter and no intense heat in summer. Land, forest, mineral resources, hydropower, geothermal, natural gas and tourism resources are abundant. The forest coverage rate of the city is 42.5%, and there are more than 2,200 species of ground plants, including more than 400 species of higher plants/kloc-0. There are large reserves, high-grade and easy-to-mine iron ore, lead-zinc ore, diatomite, wollastonite and other minerals underground. The proven lignite reserves are 365.438 billion tons, and the prospective natural gas reserves are 26 billion cubic meters. Lancang River, Nujiang River and Longchuan River pass through the territory, with a theoretical hydropower reserve of 4.89 million kilowatts. The second largest hot gas field in China 170 geothermal spring fields, with a thermal energy reserve of 2.5 million kilowatts. There are Gaoligongshan Nature Reserve (approved by UNESCO as "World Biosphere Reserve" in 2000), Tengchong Volcanic Rehai (approved as a national geological park), Nujiang Grand Canyon, which is known as the second largest canyon in the world, and beihai wetland, a national protected area, which records the crimes of China's anti-Japanese soldiers and civilians and the Japanese army.
As a transportation hub and commercial distribution center in western Yunnan, Baoshan has taken on a new look in economy and society, and achieved a leap-forward development. The national economic growth rate of Baoshan City (20 scenic spots) exceeds 9%, and the gross domestic product in 2004 can reach 9.8083 billion yuan. Initially, the industrial group mainly engaged in sugar, metallurgy, food processing, pharmacy, wood processing, electricity and so on. Metal silicon, electrolytic zinc, sugar, solid wood door and rattan medicine are favored by the market. Grain, rape, sugarcane, flue-cured tobacco, oriental tobacco, tea, coffee, walnuts, livestock products, etc. have formed advantages and fist products, and are important agricultural and sideline products and industrial raw material bases in China and Yunnan. Baoshan small coffee is famous at home and abroad for its unique quality. Baoshan oriental tobacco ranks first in the country in terms of "output, export volume and quality" and is the largest sun-cured tobacco base in the country. Roads in this city extend in all directions. National Highway 320 and Sino-Indian Highway, namely "stilwell road", run through the whole territory, with a mileage of 9,936 kilometers. The expressway from Kunming to Baoshan has been fully opened. The Baoshan-Longling Expressway started construction in June 2004, and Baoshan National Secondary Airport is open to Kunming, with a route distance of 370 kilometers. The construction of Tengchong Airport and the reconstruction project from Tengchong to Myitkyina, Myanmar have started. The power development in Supa River Basin and Binglang River Basin has been accelerated, and the installed capacity can reach 400,000 kilowatts in 2005. Posts and telecommunications are in line with international standards, and all towns and most villages have opened program-controlled and mobile phones.
