As early as19th century ago, people have used natural resins such as asphalt, rosin, amber and shellac. 1868, natural cellulose was nitrated, camphor was used as plasticizer, and the world's first plastic variety, called celluloid, was made, which began the history of human using plastics. Since then, the history of human use of plastics has begun. 1909, the first synthetic plastic-phenolic plastic appeared. 1920, another synthetic plastic-amino plastic (aniline formaldehyde plastic) was born. These two kinds of plastics have played a positive role in promoting the development of electrical appliance industry and instrument manufacturing industry.

In the 1920s and 1930s, alkyd resin, polyvinyl chloride, acrylate, polystyrene and polyamide appeared one after another. Since the 1940s, with the development of science, technology and industry, as well as the extensive development and utilization of petroleum resources, the plastic industry has developed rapidly. There are many kinds, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, unsaturated polyester, fluoroplastics, epoxy resin, polyformaldehyde, polycarbonate, polyimide and so on.
