Of these two dynastic histories, Hanshu recorded the history of the Western Han Dynasty and Houhanshu recorded the history of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Stylistically, Ban Gu, the author of Hanshu, is a Confucian, and his writing is honest, pure and gentle. Ye Fan, the author of the Book of the Later Han Dynasty, is a scholar. Living in the Southern Dynasties, he has the demeanor of a famous scholar in Wei and Jin Dynasties and advocates Confucianism. Ye Fan praised "the ambition to clarify the world" in the History of the Party. Aside from the contents recorded in the two books, in terms of style and knowledge, later generations seem to admire the Book of the Later Han Dynasty more. However, the annals in Hanshu retain many laws and regulations of the Han Dynasty and are rare historical materials.
The most famous Hanshu is Yan Shigu's annotation in the Tang Dynasty. Wang Xianqian's Supplementary Notes on the History of Han Dynasty and Notes on the Collection of History of Han Dynasty after Qing Dynasty should be the pinnacle of the two works of master park scholars in Qing Dynasty. The supplement and collation of Hanshu should be said to be the hero of Hanshu, and Chen once praised him as a "sage of Hanshu".
