Prosthodontics started late in China. 1949 and before the early days of the People's Republic of China, the institutions that made dentures were mainly "dental clinics" in towns, and most of them were also engaged in photography business, called "photographic dental clinics", which were scattered and operated independently. During the period from1952 to1956, the state carried out socialist transformation of private enterprises and institutions, merged dental clinics with local dental clinics, and established municipal and district dental clinics. Employees who used to work in dental clinics and dental clinics now work in dental clinics and public hospitals. Before the reform and opening up, the development of prosthodontics specialty was slow due to outdated equipment and poor material properties. Except for a few large stomatological departments and stomatological hospitals that have held short-term training courses for dental technicians for their own needs, there is no school specializing in training dental prosthetics technicians, and there is no unified teaching material for dental prosthetics technology. Prosthodontics technicians are mainly trained by masters and apprentices, and the business scope of prosthodontics technology is also very limited.

After the 1980s, it was a period of rapid development of prosthodontics in China. Taking the opportunity of reform and opening up, new theories, new equipment, new materials, new technologies and new processes of prosthodontics have been introduced into China, which has promoted the rapid development of prosthodontics. Porcelain restoration technology, titanium casting technology, precision attachment technology, implant denture restoration technology, CAD/CAM technology, which represent the latest technology of modern dental restoration, have been rapidly applied and popularized in dental medical units across the country. With the rapid development of prosthodontics, there are many choices for denture making. Clinical dentists choose the best restoration design scheme according to patients' oral conditions. The denture making room, which undertakes the task of denture making, must also carry out professional division of labor, that is, different professional groups are formed according to different manufacturing processes to meet the requirements of clinicians for the quality of denture making. The quality of all kinds of prostheses has generally improved, but there is still a big gap compared with foreign countries.
