The Tourism College of Sichuan University was formerly the Tourism Department of Sichuan University. This major started earlier among domestic counterparts. In the mid-1980s, the major of tourism culture and management was set up on the basis of the history department to recruit junior college students. Since 1992, the direction of tourism management and culture has been officially opened in the undergraduate major of history. 1996 with the approval of the state education commission, the undergraduate major of tourism management was formally added. 1997, the Ministry of Tourism was established. On July 12, 2000, the Tourism Department of Sichuan University was upgraded to the Tourism College of Sichuan University.
The college now has four departments and one research institute: Hotel Management Department, Tourism Enterprise Management Department, Tourism Planning and Scenic Area Management Department, Tourism Culture Department and Tourism Planning and Development Research Institute. At present, on average, more than 60 undergraduates and 40 postgraduates are enrolled each year. The college has comprehensive academic advantages of interdisciplinary infiltration, solid discipline theory and strong scientific research ability, and has considerable theoretical attainments and practical experience in the planning and development of tourism resources, especially humanistic tourism resources. Teachers' majors include tourism economy, business administration, tourism planning, professional foreign languages, museum science, architecture, religion, archaeology, history, ecology and so on. At present, our college has four postgraduate research directions: tourism resources planning and development, tourism enterprise management, hotel management and tourism culture.
