From 65438 to 0977, the head office of the People's Bank of China held a national banking work conference in Beijing to discuss and study the construction and development policy of financial education, and with the consent of the State Council, it was decided to establish banking secondary specialized schools in all provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government. 1979 approved by the head office of the People's Bank of China and the former Revolutionary Committee of Yunnan Province, Yunnan Banking School was formally established, and officially enrolled students for the society in September 1980.

In August 2000, in order to deepen the reform of the education system, according to the spirit of the State Council Guofa (1999) No.26 "Decision on Further Adjusting the Management System and Layout Structure of Schools Affiliated to Departments (Units) in the State Council" and China People's Bank Yinfa (2000) 105 "Notice on Implementing Opinions on the Transfer of Institutions Affiliated to China People's Bank", Reply of the General Office of the People's Government of Yunnan Province (2000) 107 Regarding the ownership of local management rights of Yunnan Bank School, Yunnan Bank School was merged into Yunnan Normal University and the School of Finance and Finance of Yunnan Normal University was established.

On June 6, 2007, the Party Committee of Yunnan Normal University decided to establish the School of Economics on the basis of the School of Finance and Economics.

At the beginning of May 2009, in order to meet the requirements of the school and better cultivate compound talents in economic management, the School of Economics was renamed as the School of Economic Management.
