Historical Evolution of Provincial Administrative Regions in China

Before the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), there were 49 provincial administrative regions in China. 1949, People's Republic of China (PRC) (PRC) was established, and the whole country was divided into five administrative regions, 1 administrative unit of municipality directly under the central government, governing 30 provinces, 1 autonomous region, 12 municipality directly under the central government, 5 administrative regions, 1 place,/

Rename the original administrative region to the Administrative Committee. The administrative system was abolished and the original province was restored.

During the period of 1953, there were six administrative committees in North China, Northeast China, Northwest China, East China, Central South China and Southwest China. China has 30 provinces, 1 autonomous region, 14 municipalities, 1 region, 1 region.

1954, six administrative committees were abolished, and the highest local administrative unit became a province, with a total of 26 provinces, 1 autonomous region, 3 municipalities directly under the central government, 1 place, 1 region.

1955, Jehol Province was abolished, and the administrative area was merged into Hebei Province, Liaoning Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Xikang province was abolished and the administrative area was merged into Sichuan province. Xinjiang Province was abolished and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was established. Preparatory committee for the tibet autonomous region was established to administer Qamdo region.

1957, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was established.

1958, Tianjin changed to Hebei province. Guangxi Province was abolished and Guangxi Gelao Autonomous Region was established.

1965, Xizang Autonomous Region was founded, and Guangxi Yi Autonomous Region was renamed Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

1967, Tianjin was re-promoted as a municipality directly under the central government.

1988, Hainan province was established.

1997 Chongqing municipality was established to administer Chongqing, Wanxian, Fuling and Qianjiang areas in the former Sichuan province. Resume the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong and establish the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

From 65438 to 0999, China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Macao and established the Macao Special Administrative Region. In this way, 34 provincial administrative regions have been formed.
