The Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-589) was a divided period in China's history after the Five Lakes and Sixteen Countries. Usually, the four regimes of Song, Qi, Liang and Chen, with Jiankang (now Nanjing) as their capital, are called the Southern Dynasties. After the unification of the North, the Northern Wei, the Eastern Wei and the Western Wei split at the end of the Wei Dynasty, and the subsequent Northern Qi and Northern Zhou Dynasties were called the Northern Dynasties.
From the establishment of Liu Song by Emperor Wu of Song in 420 to the annihilation of Chen Nan in 589, the Southern and Northern Dynasties existed for 170 years. /kloc-During 0/70 years, Nanjing was the capital of the Southern Dynasties. Nanjing experienced Song Dynasty, Qi Dynasty, Liang Dynasty and Chen Dynasty, plus Soochow and Eastern Jin Dynasty, hence the name "Ancient Capital of Six Dynasties".
The capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty was Pingcheng (now Datong City, Shanxi Province) and later moved to Luoyang. Luoyang, from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Western Jin Dynasty, and then from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Sui and Tang Dynasties, continued to write the glory of the Millennium Imperial Capital. Yecheng (now Linzhang County, Hebei Province) was its capital in the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi Dynasties, and Chang 'an (now this city) was its capital in the Western Wei and Northern Zhou Dynasties.

There are more than three histories in the Northern and Southern Dynasties: many dynasties, many civil strife and many murders. 170 troubled times can be roughly divided into three stages: the early stage-the stalemate between the Song and Wei Dynasties, the middle stage-the replacement of the Qi and Liang Dynasties in the Song Dynasty, and the late stage-the reunification after the split of the Northern Wei Dynasty.

Representative events: the change of the river shade, the division of the Northern Wei Dynasty, the destruction of the Northern Qi in the Northern Zhou Dynasty, and the destruction of the Southern Chen in the Sui Dynasty.
