The twenty-four dynasties are the Qin Dynasty, the Western Han Dynasty, the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Three Kingdoms, the Western Jin Dynasty, the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the Southern Song Dynasty, the Southern Qi Dynasty, the Southern Liang Dynasty, the Southern Chen Dynasty, the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Northern Qi Dynasty, the Northern Zhou Dynasty, the Sui Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty, the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, the Song Dynasty, the Liao State, the Jin State, the Western Xia Dynasty, the Song Dynasty, the Yuan Dynasty, the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty.

Twenty-four histories are the general name of twenty-four historical books written by China in the past dynasties. Because the writing style of Historical Records has been accepted as a formal historical writing technique in past dynasties, historical books written in biographical style like Historical Records are called "official history". It started from the legendary Yellow Emperor (about 2550 BC) and ended in the seventeenth year of Chongzhen in Ming Dynasty (1644), with a total of 3229 volumes and about 40 million words. It was written in a unified biographical style, with biographies and biographies of this period of history.
