IB Education, known as "mature international quality education", is a non-profit education fund established in 1968. The original intention of IB course is to serve the children of diplomats, and to set up courses with global unified standards to facilitate the children of migrant families from all countries to enter international schools. Naturally, the most popular school that uses IB courses at present is an international school. IB offers four highly regarded international education programs, namely:
Primary education programme
Preschool primary school project
Middle-aged program
Middle school project
Diploma course-IBDP
Pre-university program
Career-related programs -IBCP
Career-related projects
Schools offering IB courses, that is, schools with IB qualifications, must be authorized by IB organizations to carry out IB system teaching. It has a hard-won high reputation in teaching level, educational leadership and student achievement. In Chinese mainland, many schools offer IBDP courses in senior high schools, because it is a project closely related to students' further education. On the other hand, IBDP is also the earliest project. However, there are not many schools that provide a complete IB education system from preschool to high school. So what kind of talents does IB want to train? What is its educational goal? We get the answer from the IB mission statement of the International Diploma Organization and the training objectives of learners:
The goal of the International Diploma Organization is to cultivate studious, knowledgeable and caring young people who will contribute to creating a better and more peaceful world through understanding and respect for multiculturalism.
In order to achieve this goal, the International Diploma Organization has cooperated with many schools, governments and other international organizations to develop a series of challenging international education projects and strict evaluation systems. These programs encourage students from all over the world to become active and compassionate lifelong learners. They understand that although there are differences between people, others' views may be correct.
Let's learn about the curriculum and characteristics of each project one by one.
The picture above shows the curriculum framework of the primary school project, which is mainly aimed at children aged 3- 12. In the center of the circle is the profile of IB learners, which is what we call the learner training goal. This is the training goal of the whole IB education system, so the curriculum of secondary schools, preparatory courses and vocational projects below is also around this goal. The implementation of IB PYP project starts from five factors: knowledge (knowledge), concept (skill), attitude (attitude) and action (action), covering a series of educational activities from curriculum design and thinking cultivation to community activities and practice.
In the whole education process, teachers' effective teaching and guidance can help learners acquire knowledge, form an understanding of important concepts (form, function, reason, change, connection, viewpoint, responsibility and reflection), help students explore different ways of thinking about the world and learning the world, and form a positive learning attitude (devotion, self-confidence, cooperation, creation, curiosity, empathy and enthusiasm) in the process. Master basic skills (social skills, communication skills, thinking skills, research skills and self-management skills) and take responsible actions (direct action, indirect action, initiative and action research).
Primary school curriculum design includes: Chinese (language), mathematics (mathematics), science (science), social studies (social studies), art (art) and PSPE (personal, social and physical education). The courses offered by schools offering full IB PYP courses also need to cover the above six modules.
Different from other systems, the most striking feature of IBPYP is its six interdisciplinary course, also known as six inquiry topics. PYP inquiry course revolves around these six interdisciplinary themes. The so-called interdisciplinary is to break through the boundaries between traditional disciplines and provide a framework for students to explore the unknown world. These six themes are considered suitable for children of all ages, covering language, humanities, individuals, society, sports, mathematics, art and technology. In the process of inquiry learning, students form an understanding of important concepts, master basic knowledge and skills, form a positive attitude and learn to take responsible actions. It also just echoes the five project implementation factors we just mentioned in this process. These six interdisciplinary themes are:
Who Are We?
Who are we?
The time and space in which we live.
Our position in space and time
How do we express ourselves?
How do we express ourselves?
How does the world work
How does the world work
How do we organize ourselves?
How do we organize ourselves?
How can we enjoy a planet?
Share the earth
Children of different ages can have different levels of discussion and study under the same inquiry theme, and they can also have different inquiry main lines. Take who we are as an example. Children in lower grades may learn body organs under this theme: nose, eyes, arms and so on. Our identities: boys, girls, babies at home, students at school and so on. How do we keep healthy: food classification, how to eat reasonably and so on. Senior children may be exploring our role in this society, our identity, how to treat individualism and collectivism and so on. But similarly, the exploration of each theme level is deepened layer by layer according to the steps of the exploration circle: tuning in-finding out-sorting out-further-drawing conclusions-taking action.
It should be noted that not only the class teacher is conducting unit teaching around the theme, but also other teachers need to conduct teaching together under this inquiry theme unit. Because the way to explore the theme is multi-angle and all-round. We should make knowledge three-dimensional and networked, rather than teaching in different disciplines. Students need to understand knowledge, master skills, explore relevant learning content in a certain situation, and go beyond the boundaries between traditional disciplines to carry out learning. This will also help students to establish the relationship between what they have learned and various disciplines, explore ways to integrate knowledge from different disciplines, and finally realize the integration of knowledge and practice.
IBMYP is designed for students aged 1 1- 16. This project was carried out by IB in 1994. Although the middle school project started earlier than the primary school project (1997), its popularity is far less than PYP, let alone DP. Many international schools use IBPYP courses in primary and secondary schools? IGCSE /GCSE course, and then return to IBDP course in high school. It can be said that MYP is not a mainstream course at present, and everyone has a high acceptance of IGCSE /GCSE. Because there is no direct connection between PYP and MYP, the school has a lot of room for curriculum arrangement. But in the future, the course of MYP will be accepted by more schools (such as the British Hong Kong Foundation), because MYP is gradually moving closer to DP, which means that learning MYP will better prepare for the DP stage. Let's take a brief look at MYP here.
MYP provides a systematic framework for learning and encourages students to grow into creative, critical and reflective thinkers. Middle school projects emphasize intellectual challenges and encourage students to establish links between traditional subjects and between classroom learning and the real world. It cultivates students' skills in communication, cross-cultural understanding and global participation, which are crucial qualities for young people who will become global leaders.
The middle school project consists of eight subject groups: language acquisition (language B), language and literature (language A), individual and society, science, mathematics, art, physical education and health education, and design.
Middle school project training objectives:
? Make students develop in an all-round way in intelligence, sociality, emotion and body;
? Provide opportunities for students to gradually master the knowledge, attitude and skills needed to deal with complex affairs and take responsible actions in the future;
? Through the study of 8 subject groups and interdisciplinary study, the breadth and depth of understanding are guaranteed;
It is required to learn at least two languages (teaching language and elective foreign language) to support students to understand their own culture and other people's culture;
Let students participate in community service activities;
? Help students prepare for further study, work and lifelong learning.
IBDP is a two-year course designed for high school students. Generally speaking, DP is a project that everyone is most concerned about, because it has a direct relationship with students' further studies, and various media also like to compare the performance of students from different regions after the DP global unified examination. The IBDP score is 45, including 6 subject groups, namely
Group 1: Language and Literature Language A- Native Language Learners
Group 2: LanguageB- second language learners, Language abinitio- second language beginners.
The third group: humanities, including history, geography, economy, philosophy, psychology, etc.
The fourth group: experimental science, including physics, chemistry, biology, environmental engineering, etc.
Group 5: Mathematics, including advanced, intermediate and elementary mathematics.
Group 6: Art and elective courses, including art design, music, drama art, etc.
Each course is divided into advanced course HL (advanced level) and general course SL (standard level). Of the six courses selected, three must be advanced courses.
7 points for each subject, out of 42 points. In addition, TOK and extended essay are both 3 points. The qualified score of IBDP is 24.
The ib course is not only characterized by learning these six subjects in an interrelated way, but also all students must complete the following three important activities:
0 1) innovation, action and service
(creativity,? Action, service)
This course encourages students to cultivate their sympathy, social responsibility and teamwork spirit by participating in school cultural and sports activities, social activities and voluntary service.
02) Theory of Knowledge (theory of knowledge)
Knowledge theory is an interdisciplinary course, which teaches students to think and analyze problems from subjective and objective, positive and negative perspectives. Reflect on your knowledge and experience gained in school and society, so as to find a suitable learning method in your study as soon as possible. The training goal of TOK is: to be a critical thinker, to cultivate students' attitudes and methods towards knowledge, and to have the ability to question existing knowledge and judgment.
Example: "Things are not necessarily what you see." "Accuracy is a difficult thing to achieve and determine." "We are all looking for the truth. Have you considered using different viewpoints to reasonably explain your beliefs? "
03) Write an extended essay.
IB course requires students to combine their knowledge with research methods, choose any course they are interested in and conduct independent research for nine months under the guidance of their tutors. Write a 4000-word research paper according to the writing requirements of university academic papers. By writing papers, students' independent thinking ability, information gathering ability and writing ability of organizing articles are cultivated. The topic selection and completion of EE requires students to read a lot, which may come from elective literary works or from the list of China writers in LanguageA A ... usually under the guidance of a language and literature teacher. The DP stage, like other projects, has no fixed teaching materials, which is a great challenge for teachers. It is necessary to choose literary works suitable for students and cooperate with literary teaching methods. IB lists China writers and recommends Chinese and Western translations for reference.
