Although Guan Yu pursued the battlefield, he never called himself a warrior. On the contrary, he loves ancient classics, especially Zuo Zhuan, and knows them by heart. At that time, no one could match him. Such excellent people are often a little arrogant, especially Guan Yu. Historical records show that Guan Yu is "brave, conceited and overbearing", "brave and foolhardy, arrogant and arrogant", and so on. It can be seen that in the eyes of the ancients, Guan Yu was somewhat conceited and competitive, so the loss of Jingzhou was not so unexpected.
According to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, in the twenty-four years of Jian 'an, Liu Bei made great efforts to win Hanzhong, and immediately made him a general, and Guan Yu was the top "former general". At that time, Guan Yu had been stationed in Jingzhou (including only Guiyang, Wuling, Lingling and Changsha) for nearly ten years. Whether Wu Dong or Cao Wei, he was afraid and did not dare to offend. After a long period of complacency, Guan Yu had the idea of taking advantage of the situation to expand the territory, and led the army out of the city to attack Xiangyang and Fancheng. This time, with the help of God, Guan Yu won the victory of seven flood armies, but was calculated by Monroe of Wu Dong. He easily won Jingzhou and defeated Maicheng, but was captured and killed. When the news of death came, Liu Bei "fell to the ground with a scream" and it took a long time to wake up. Everyone looked sad and didn't know what to do, but Zhuge Liang bowed his head and said nothing, and there was no record of Zhuge Liang crying for Guan Yu.
Zhuge Liang's performance just shows that he knows Guan Yu very well and is not surprised by his death. As early as the twelfth year of Jian 'an, after Liu Bei invited Zhuge Liang to go down the mountain, Guan Yu was greatly unhappy, because Liu Bei often planned with Zhuge Liang, especially Zhuge Liang was nearly twenty years younger than Guan Yu, so even if they were in the same camp for more than ten years, they did not agree, admired or talked to each other. For Guan Yu's "arrogant and easy-going" personality, Liu Bei left it alone, which led to Shu Han's drifting with the tide. Although Zhuge Liang understands, he should be careful. Just like after Xiliang Ma Chao joined Liu Bei, Guan Yu, who was far away from Jingzhou, heard of Ma Jinchao's fame and immediately wrote to ask Ma Chao what he could do and who he could compete with.
Zhuge Liang knew Guan Yu's mind, so he deliberately said in his letter that Ma Mengqi was brave, but he could only keep pace with Zhang Yide, far less than the bearded Guan Yu. This is exactly what Guan Yu wanted. He was very happy to read the letter. Among Liu Bei's self-proclaimed Hanzhong kings, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Ma Chao and Huang Zhong are four great generals, but Guan Yu refused to be blocked because he didn't like Huang Zhong, complaining that "gentlemen and veterans are not in the same column". Zhaoyun was not among the sealed people, but he didn't complain. Guan Yu is among the best, but he is also very picky and has risen to the point of conflict with his master, which makes Liu Bei very unhappy. So, in order to guard against Guan Yu's troubles, Liu Bei sent his cronies Mi Fang (Mrs. Mi's brother) as the prefect of Nanjun, stationed in Jiangling, and urged Guan Yu everywhere. Mi Zhu is Liu Bei's brother-in-law, but it is still useless. Guan Yu still doesn't treat Mi Fang well, and they are at odds.
It can be seen that Guan Yu was conceited on the eve of losing Jingzhou. As the saying goes, "Pride goes before a fall". Guan Yu's own loopholes gave Monroe a chance in Wu Dong, so his fate was not unexpected for Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei. At that time, Jingzhou was divided into three parts, and three generals of Wu, Wei and Shu were stationed. It can be described as a real dangerous place, and a slight negligence will lead to losses.
Guan Yu is in danger, so long as he abides by Zhuge Liang's strategy of "linking Sun Wu in the east and Cao Wei in the north", he can rest easy. But when Sun Quan of Soochow came to get married, Guan Yu swore at him, so that Sun Quan hated his guts and laid a curse. Liu Bei, as the eldest brother, could not dissuade him severely.
