Guan Yu, whose name is Yunchang, was named Hou Ting of Hanshou in the fourth year of Jian 'an (199). Later, Liu Bei entered Yizhou, and Guan Yu stayed in Jingzhou.

In the twenty-fourth year of Jian 'an (2 19), Guan Yu surrounded the second city of Xiangfan, and Cao Cao sent reinforcements. Guan Yu captured Yu Jin alive and killed Pound, which greatly shocked China. Cao Cao once wanted to move Xu capital to avoid its sharpness. Extended data:

Sun Quan gave Guan Yu's head to Cao Cao, and Cao Cao buried it in Luoyang as a gift from the princes, which is usually considered as Guan Lin. However, there is a view in modern times that Guan Yu's tomb in Guanzhuang Village is the place where Guan Yu's head is buried, and Guanlin is just a shrine built in Wanli. Sun Quan buried Guan Yu's body in Dangyang, which is called Guan Ling, also known as Dangyang King's Tomb.

The Shu-Han regime built a cenotaph for Guan Yu in Chengdu, that is, the tomb of Guan Yu in Chengdu, in order to summon souls for sacrifice. Later, Guan Yu's hometown, Yuncheng, Shanxi, established the Guandi Temple, which was regarded as the place where Guan Yu's soul returned. Therefore, the folk also called Guan Yu "pillow Luoyang, lying in the sun, the soul returning to his hometown (or' soul returning to his hometown' and' soul returning to Shanxi')".

Sun Quan's sneak attack and Guan Yu's death marked the complete rupture of the Sun-Liu alliance. In the first year of Zhangwu (22 1), Liu Bei, the former leader of the Shu-Han Dynasty, thought that Guan Yu was attacking Wu Dong in the name of revenge. He made a special trip to the tomb of the King to worship Guan Yu, and built the Guandi Temple in Yuquan Mountain. Later, the army of Shu and Han was defeated by Sun Quanjun led by Lu Xun in the battle of Yiling and failed to recapture Jingzhou.
