The word "Hawaii" comes from Polynesian. Around the 4th century AD, a group of Polynesians braved the waves in canoes and settled here, naming the island "Hawaii", which means "primitive home". The first European to discover these islands was Juan Gaitano of Spain, and it was the British navigator Captain Cook who really made Hawaii famous in the world. He landed on the Hawaiian Islands in 1778. 1795, Sheikh Kamihamiha conquered other tribes and established the kingdom of Hawaii. Hawaii was annexed by the United States in 1898, and 1959 became the 50th state of the United States.

Hawaii is a pearl in the Pacific Ocean. It is 3846 kilometers east of San Francisco, USA, and 6200 kilometers west of Tokyo, Japan. It is an air and sea transportation hub in the Pacific region.
