1869, the Russians made their second and last attempt. They named this port KraSi Nuo Wotsk (Russian: красноводск), which is the real name of this city.
1993 carat Si Nuo wotzker was renamed by the then Turkmen president Saparmyrat Ataewi Nyazow with his personal title Turkmen bashi (meaning the leader of all Turkmen people). In July 2007, Niyazov's successor, Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov, promised to invest one billion dollars in a project in the future, which will make Turkmenbashi an important tourist attraction and the center of Avaza tourist area, and build 60 modern hotels on the Caspian coastline of 16 km.
