Content introduction:
There are some famous writers whose works have gained many new readers because of the publication of cheap books. I was deeply honored when I saw my name on the list of these writers. I hope some readers can get some pleasure from reading my book, just as I felt when I wrote it fifty years ago. Among my works, History and Historians of the Nineteenth Century is my favorite, mainly because it discusses a topic of infinite interest-the dramatic stories of all cultures. As Popper said, "the proper study of man is man".
A historian in his eighties can look back with great satisfaction on the progress made by various academic research departments in his life. Compared with those distant days when I was studying, today we can summarize the process of human evolution and all human experiences with broader knowledge, clearer knowledge and calmer mind. Now the general academic level is indeed higher than before. We are not so confident, so dominated by prejudice, and so easy to make specious generalizations. Our lofty ideal and primary responsibility is to live up to the infinite trust of readers. Frank has an immortal famous saying: "compiling history is a painstaking thing." Anyone who loudly defends his race, his country, his political party or church is denied access to the temple of the goddess of history. If someone asked me to draft the "Ten Commandments" of historians, I would write "Don't forget your moral responsibility to readers" first. Historians, like others, are flesh and blood, and the author's personality will always be revealed between the lines, but we must try our best to be fair and try our best to understand the living conditions in distant times and the ideology we never had. All historical researchers should not judge controversial issues such as the Reformation and the French Revolution based on a writer or a book, because it is extravagant to achieve complete agreement in some fields that involve our deepest feelings. All I ask is that scholars should not regard them as fighters in the arena and fight in the cheers of their supporters; We should treat them as brothers who pursue the truth wholeheartedly. Among the many historians described in this book, to what extent each person has reached or approached this lofty goal, let the readers judge for themselves.
About the author:
This book is a masterpiece of western historians. It was reprinted from the first edition 19 13. The author Gucci is a first-rate British historian. He read widely, was familiar with the works of western historians in the19th century, and knew their characters (such as Napoleon) or ancient history (such as the history of Greece and Rome) like the palm of his hand, so he had unique comments on historians and their works at that time. This book can also be described as a historical review.
