The terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast. From north to south, there are three mountains, Yishan, Mengshan and Nishan, which extend to the northwest and southeast, controlling the flow direction of the upper reaches of Yishu River and its main tributaries. With yi river as the center, it is surrounded by mountains in the west, north and east, forming a fan-shaped alluvial plain to the south. The areas of mountains, hills and plains are distributed in the proportion of two, four and four.

The geological structure of Linyi city is complex and the strata are underdeveloped. From Archaean to Cenozoic, except for Upper Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Lower Carboniferous, Triassic, Middle and Lower Jurassic, Paleogene, Paleogene and Neogene, all other strata developed.

The main structure is the Tancheng-Lujiang fault zone (called Yishu fault zone in China), which runs through Tancheng and the whole city in a north-north direction. Taking the fault as the boundary, the western part of Luxi platform belongs to the category of North China platform, and the eastern part of Jiaonan uplift belongs to the category of Yangtze block.
