The history of Gutian Town has been recorded in writing since the Tang Dynasty. In the fourth year of the Tang Dynasty (AD 769), the city was established in Shanghangchang.
In the fifth year of Song Chunhua (AD 994), Shanghang was upgraded from Changsheng County, and the northeast of its jurisdiction was Gutian Land. In Song Dynasty, there were 4 townships, 2 regiments and 5 villages in Shanghang County, and Gutian Town was one of them.
In the 24th year of Guangxu reign in Qing Dynasty (A.D. 1898), after the "coup d' é tat in 1898", the new law was implemented, and the fifth district was established in Gutianli.
Gutian belonged to the third district of Shanghang County in the early Republic of China.
In May of the Republic of China 18 (1929), the Red Fourth Front Army led by Mao Zedong, Zhu De and Chen Yi marched from Jinggangshan into southern Jiangxi and western Fujian, and established the Soviet regime in Gutian, Shanghang. At that time, Gutian belonged to the North Fifth District under the jurisdiction of the Soviet government in Shanghang County.
In the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935), Gutian and Yang Jiaohe merged into fourth area;
1September, 949, Gutian Yang Jiao was merged into a district called Gujiao District;
1June, 950, Gujiao District was renamed as the seventh district;
1960 in March, Yang Jiao merged with Gutian to form Gutian commune;
1984, the real administrative organization was separated and changed to a township (town), and Gutian Township was established;
1September, 986, Jianzhen.
