Why build the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge?
Reason:

1. The predecessor of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was the originally planned Lingdingyang Bridge. In the early 1980s, although the land transportation routes between Hong Kong, Macau and the mainland of China continued to improve, the transportation links between Hong Kong and the west bank of the Pearl River Delta were restricted by the barrier of Lingdingyang.

2. In the late 1990s, influenced by the Asian financial crisis, the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region thought it necessary to build a cross-sea passage connecting Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao as soon as possible, so as to give full play to the advantages of Hong Kong and Macao and seek new economic growth points.

Route direction:

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge adopts the linear scheme from Shishan Shiwan to Gongbei Mingzhu. The main bridge section starts from Shisan Bay in the northwest of Lantau Island, Islands District, New Territories, Hong Kong in the east, connects with Hong Kong Port, passes through Hong Kong waters, passes through Tonggu Waterway, Dingling West Waterway, Qingzhou Waterway and Jiuzhou Waterway at the Pearl River Estuary in turn along the north side of the 23rd anchorage, passes through the southeast of Gongbei Bay in Zhuhai and ends at the artificial island at Zhuhai Macau Port.

Significance of Expanding the Construction of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

This is of great political significance. The political significance of this bridge lies in that it is a fruitful achievement of "one country, two systems" in practice and truly embodies the concrete practice of "one country, two systems" in bridge construction and operation management.

The formation of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area's concept. If Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area does not realize land transportation connectivity, it will only be the concept of "Pearl River Delta". With this bridge, Greater Bay Area will form a concept of transportation. After the bridge is opened to traffic, it will form the strategic goal of "1 hour living circle" in the three places, and the era of urbanization and integration in the Pearl River Delta is coming soon.

Improve the current situation of cross-strait economic imbalance in the Pearl River Estuary. To increase Hong Kong's economic drive to the west coast and even the western part of Guangdong, this bridge provides the most convenient transportation infrastructure and the largest social coverage for the construction of Greater Bay Area, and forms a convenient east-west passage throughout Guangdong and surrounding areas.
