Kazakh National Oil and Gas Company and China Oil and Gas Company subsequently started the feasibility study of the natural gas pipeline project, while China continued to hold consultations with other Central Asian countries.
On April 3, 2006, China and Turkmenistan signed a framework agreement on natural gas pipeline construction and long-term natural gas supply. In June 2007, Turkmenistan President Gurban Gu Lei Berdymagomedov signed an agreement to speed up the construction of natural gas pipeline projects during his visit to China. In July, Turkmenistan formally joined the original Sino-Kazakhstan oil pipeline.

On August 30th, 2007, the construction of Turkmenistan section with a total length of188km started. The Uzbekistan section started construction on June 30, 2008. Construction of Kazakhstan section also started on July 9, 2008, and the first phase of the project was completed in July 2009.
