The Western Roman Empire perished in 476 AD.
After the demise of the Western Roman Empire, the Roman Empire did not actually end. The Eastern Roman Empire was not destroyed by the Ottomans until 1453. The history of the Eastern Roman Empire is a part of the Roman Empire. But the historical period spanned by the name "ancient Rome" does not include the Middle Ages.
