A native of Shicheng, Luozhou (now Lianjiang, Guangdong), whose real name is Su, entered the palace since childhood, was adopted by eunuch Yang, and later changed his surname. Following Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty to quell the palace coup, he was promoted to General Zuo Hu. During the Kaiyuan period, he successively put down the rebellions of Annan, Wu Qin, Liang Hai and Chen, and repeatedly made meritorious military service, so he was Xuanzong's right-hand man.
