Why did the later Tang State become the Jin State? What does this have to do with the name of the Tang Dynasty?
Lecture 57 on historical records.

When it comes to the state of Jin, you have to say another country. This country is called Tang State, which was a vassal state from ancient China to the early Western Zhou Dynasty. According to the five titles of public, Hou, Bo, Zi and Gong, the Tang Dynasty was a marquis. Tang, surnamed Qi, is a descendant of the legendary Yao.

In the early years of the Zhou Dynasty, the last monarch of the Tang Dynasty rebelled and was defeated by Zhou Jun under the command of Duke Zhou and Prince Yu. Wang Ziyu is the half-brother of Zhou Chengwang Song Ji and the son of Zhou Wuwang Ji Fa. His mother, Queen Jiang Yi, is the daughter of Lu Shang (also known as Jiang Ziya), the first hero awarded by Zhou royal family.

After Zhou Chengwang destroyed the ancient Tang Dynasty, Wang Ziyu was enfeoffed to the hometown of Tang State (now Yicheng and Xiangfen County). Wang Ziyu became the monarch of Tang State, and Tang State also became a vassal state of Ji. Therefore, Wang Ziyu is also called Tang Shuyu.

Because the Tang Dynasty is the old place ruled by the Xia Dynasty, surrounded by Rongdi tribes, military conflicts often occur. After Tang Shuyu succeeded to Tang Guo, he took advantage of the situation and inherited Tang Guo's original ruling experience in Xia Dynasty. In the process of getting along with Rong Di, he respected their habits and ruled Rong Di by Rong Di's method, which soon received results. Since then, Tang has settled down.

In the 11th year of Zhou Chengwang (1032), Tang Shuyu got a "bumper harvest". The so-called "golden harvest" is actually two crops with different roots but one ear. This was regarded as "good luck" falling from the sky and sent to the Zhou royal family. After Zhou Chengwang got this auspicious sign, he asked his younger brother Tang Shuyu to give this auspicious "bumper harvest" to his uncle Zhou Gongdan, and wrote "Feed the grain". After Zhou Gongdan accepted this gift, he quickly returned it and wrote "Golden Harvest" praising Zhou Chengwang.

Descendants of Tang Yao in the Tang Dynasty were all moved to Duguo (in the east of today's Xi City, Shaanxi Province) near the ruling center of the Zhou Dynasty for surveillance. Du continued until the early Spring and Autumn Period. With the rise of the state of Qin, it was finally destroyed by the government of Qin Ning.

After Tang Shuyu's death, his son Ji Xie (also called Ji Xie's father) succeeded to the throne. After Ji Xie succeeded to the throne, he moved the Tang State to Jinshui (Wengshan in the west of Jinyang County, where there is a memorial Jinci), so he renamed it "Jin". Since then, the State of Tang has become the State of Jin, and the evil of Ji has also become the post-evil country.

Jinci

One of the descendants of Jin Houxie, who moved to Suizhou City and Zaoyang City in Hubei Province, is still called "Tang State". In the first 506 years, the state of Tang, Wu and Cai (in Macheng City, Hubei Province, north of Hanchuan, Hubei Province) participated in the "Battle of the White Pony", and the allied forces defeated the Chu State that held a grudge against them. The following year, the Tang Dynasty was destroyed by the State of Chu.

Battle of the white colt

When it comes to "The Battle of the White Pony", few people may have heard of it, but when it comes to "Wu Zixu takes revenge and whips the corpse of King Chu Ping", it is estimated that many people will suddenly realize it. In the battle of Wu attacking Chu, Wu attacked with 30,000 troops. Under the leadership of Wu Zixu and Sun Wu, he fought repeatedly and suddenly, and won all five wars, breaking through the 200,000-strong army of Chu and hitting Chu hard.

There are two legends about "Tang Shuyu was sealed". The first one said that the mother dreamed of God and said, "I want you to have a son named Yu, and I will name him Tang." When he was born, he saw the word "Yu" written on his palm and named it "Yu".

The second one said that Zhou Chengwang and Wang Ziyu were playing games, and Wang Cheng cut a tung leaf into pieces? (The name of Gu Yu. A strip with a triangular upper end and a square lower end. When the nobles were hired, sacrificed and buried, they thought it was a ritual vessel. According to its size, don't condescend. ) and said, "Seal you with this." When the historian saw it, he asked for an auspicious day for Wang Ziyu. Zhou Chengwang said, "I'm joking with him!" The historian said, "The son of heaven is joking. As long as you say it, historians will write it down truthfully, follow the etiquette, and then play music and praise. " So Zhou Chengwang gave Wang Ziyu the 100-mile square of Tang Guo.

The former one is obviously far-fetched. It is normal for a mother to ask for a reward for her child, but it is really outrageous and incredible to write it in the hands of a newborn child. But the second one is more interesting and emphasizes the role of historians. As a witness of history, the motivation for emphasizing the award may not be pure, but the purpose is clear: to consolidate the rule of the Zhou royal family. The rule of the Zhou royal family is based on a series of systems, such as patriarchal clan system, ritual and music system, which must be maintained.

Tang Gaozu Liyuan statue

Here, I want to say some digressions, such as why the Tang Dynasty took "Tang" as its country name, and also talk about the ancient "Tang State" mentioned above. Tang Gaozu Tang Gaozu was a hereditary duke of the Tang Dynasty, and his fief was in Taiyuan, the hometown of the Tang Dynasty today. Before starting, he also went to Jinci to pray, hoping that Tang Shuyu would bless him to start smoothly. Therefore, after winning the world, it is natural to take "Tang" as the country name.

Slice history, talk a little every day, thank you for your attention, see you tomorrow.
