272 former prisoners of war left Leyte Island on February 1945 1 1 and arrived in San Francisco on March 8 via New Guinea and the Netherlands. During this period, Japan vigorously publicized that its navy submarines, warships and planes were chasing ships through the English broadcast nicknamed "Tokyo Rose" specially used for psychological warfare against the US military. However, this was just a bluff and the ship finally arrived in Hong Kong safely.
The success of the rescue mission has been widely recognized and highly praised. General MacArthur praised the operation as "an extraordinary feat and an extraordinary return to all parties concerned". MacArthur awarded the Medal of Honor 1945 to the officers and men who participated in the rescue operation on March 3rd: Lieutenant Colonel mutch and his deputy Captain Prince were awarded the Army Cross (a senior medal awarded by the US military, second only to the Medal of Honor, especially to those who made outstanding contributions to the army) for their outstanding services. All US military officers and some soldiers who participated in the operation were awarded the Silver Star Medal, and all other members who participated in the operation, including all Philippine guerrillas who participated in the war, were awarded. The success of this rescue and the rescue of Los Banos later on February 23rd are the sincere cooperation of rangers, Alamo soldiers, Philippine guerrillas and relevant ground and aviation teams. Without the full assistance of the local people, the whole task will be extremely difficult or even impossible to complete.
This makes the examples of war included in the teaching materials and become a model for all American troops to learn in the future.
