Jiangsu is one of the birthplaces of ancient civilization in China. 1993 Homo erectus fossils found in Tangshan, Nanjing show that ancient humans lived here as early as 500 thousand years ago. Prior to this, 1954, the human fossils discovered by archaeologists in Dongxiacaowan, Shuanggou Town, Sihong were between Beijingers and modern people, about 40,000 to 50,000 years ago, belonging to the late Paleolithic period. Paleoanthropologists call them Xiacaowan people, also known as Sihong newcomers.

Majiabang cultural paddy field discovered in Caoxieshan site 6000 years ago is the earliest ancient paddy field with irrigation system in China.

Jiangsu has UNESCO's masterpiece 10, ranking first in China, with more than 20,000 intangible cultural heritage project resources, national intangible cultural heritage list 108, Jiangsu intangible cultural heritage list 369, municipal intangible cultural heritage list 1424 and county intangible cultural heritage list/kloc-0.
