Following Shangshu and Chunqiu, the historical prose in the pre-Qin period mainly includes three classics: Zuo Zhuan, Guoyu and Warring States Policy.

The full name of Zuozhuan is Chunqiu Zuozhuan, which is one of the thirteen Confucian classics. Zuo Zhuan is not only a historical masterpiece of ancient Han nationality, but also a literary masterpiece. Zuo Zhuan is China's first detailed chronicle work. According to legend, it was compiled by Zuo Qiuming, a historian of the State of Lu at the end of the Spring and Autumn Period, according to the History of the State of Lu. The narrative scope began in the year of Luyin (722 BC) and ended in the twenty-seventh year of Lu Aigong (468 BC). It mainly records the important events and figures in politics, economy, military affairs, diplomacy and culture of various countries in the first 254 years of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty.

Guoyu is the earliest national style work in China. This record covers the period from the 12th year of Zhou Muwang (990 BC) to the Western Expedition (about 947 BC) to the demise of Zhi Bo (453 BC). Including courtship, banquets, satire, arguments, responses and some historical events and legends among nobles in various countries.

The Warring States Policy is a national historical work, also known as the national policy. It recorded the major events of Western Zhou Dynasty, Eastern Zhou Dynasty, Qin Dynasty, Qi Dynasty, Chu Dynasty, Zhao Dynasty, Wei Dynasty, Han Dynasty, Yan Dynasty, Song Dynasty, Wei Dynasty and Zhongshan, about 240 years ago. It is divided into 12 strategy, 33 volumes and 497 articles, which mainly describe the political opinions and words and deeds strategies of lobbyists during the Warring States period, and can also be said to be a practical exercise manual of lobbyists.
