Whether there was a Yu Dynasty before Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, historians have different opinions. A common view is that there was no Yu before Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties. Before Xia Dynasty, only Yao, Shun and Yu abdicated, and Shun (You Yu) was in power for only fifty years, so it was difficult to establish a dynasty.

Another view is that the Yu Dynasty actually existed for a long time in ancient history. Mr. Han Feizi said, "Xia Yu has a history of more than two thousand years." According to this view, the Youyu family is not just a 50-year generation. In addition, according to the historical records such as Guoyu and Zuo Zhuan, the lineage of You Yu can be classified as Mu, Jing Kang and so on.
