On this day in history:115465438+February 4th, Pope Adrian IV was named Nicholas Brespier, from St. alban, Hertfordshire, England. He liked the church since he was a child, but he was rejected by the local monastery because of lack of education. 1 125 years, he studied in Merton Abbey, but as a Saxon in Norman England, there was little room for improvement, so Nicholas decided to go to arles to find his own wealth. Redouble efforts, Nicholas's performance on the other side of the strait is much better. When he visited St. Rufus Abbey, he was invited to stay and soon became the abbot. Pope Anastasius IV saw his potential immediately when he was dealing with church affairs in Rome. He ordered Nicholas to stay in Rome and appointed him as a cardinal. His first job was to set up an archbishop position in Norway, which was a delicate task to say the least. His success won him public honor and praise-there is no doubt that the papacy.

Shortly after his return to Rome (he was called the "Apostle of the North"), Anastasius IV died.11On February 4th, 5438, Cardinal Nicholas Brespier was elected Pope and named Adrian IV. He will be the only Englishman to ascend the throne of the Pope (so far).

The new pope has many dramatic things to deal with. Arnold of Brescia and his friends occupied Rome and killed Cardinal Gerard in broad daylight. Adrian set a new precedent by blocking the city before everything was under control.

Then, the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Friedrich Barbarossa, wanted Adrian to crown him. This sounds simple, but in this case, always consider a pecking order. The Pope was happy to obey, but insisted that Barbarossa use stirrups to salute him when riding.

Barbarossa told the Pope where he could put the stirrup, until he found out that Emperor Lochiel also paid tribute to the early Pope. However, when the time came, Barbarossa played his role with irony and ridicule, and the audience all laughed.

Then the king of Sicily began to perform. His powerful army forced Adrian to make concessions, which angered Barbarossa, who claimed some land given by the Pope. Therefore, the Pope had to form an alliance with the Germans to protect the invading forces of the holy Roman emperor. The Pope also awarded King Henry II of England Ireland as a part of his kingdom, which aroused great excitement and laid the groundwork for the Millennium Rebellion. No matter how noble his intentions are,

Adrian IV once told his friend John of Salisbury that he wished he had never left England. Can you blame him? "

He died in 1 159.
