Chinese history in Indonesia
Chinese have been in Indonesia for thousands of years.

Before the invasion of western colonists, China people and indigenous people lived in harmony and made important contributions to the prosperity of local economy.

After the Dutch colonial rule, a large number of Chinese went to Indonesia to make a living or were treated as laborers. They fully participated in the transformation of Indonesia's economy from a natural economy to a market economy and played an important role.

In the 20th century, Indonesia witnessed the awakening of Chinese and aborigines and the dual-track national movement, which gradually merged in the struggle for national independence.

After Indonesian independence, the idea of "aboriginism" among aborigines rose, and there was a large-scale economic exclusion against China.

During the new order period, the idea of "aboriginality" became more and more fierce, and China people adopted a compulsory, rapid and thorough assimilation policy in an attempt to achieve complete "aboriginality" by destroying all the characteristics of China people, which led to the 1998 "May Riot" and the collapse of the new order regime.

It was not until Indonesia entered the period of democratic reform that it had a more objective and fair evaluation of the historical position, role and contribution of Chinese.
