The splayed bridge was built in 1256 and rebuilt in 1783.
The splay bridge connects three streets and three rivers. The deck of the splayed bridge is composed of parallel strips, 4.85 meters long and 5 meters high. The bridge deck is 3.2 meters wide and the bridge is 27 meters long from east to west. The north and south slopes of the East Bridge are 12.4m and 17.4m respectively, the south slope of the West Bridge is l4 m, and the southwest slope is 17m.
The balustrade of the 8-shaped bridge is engraved with lotus flowers on the watchtower. The bridge is a stone wall, 4 meters high, and the fifth pier on the west side of the main tunnel is engraved with the words "Shi Bao Chen Bing was built on a midsummer auspicious day".
The figure-of-eight bridge is a beam-type stone bridge, with nine stone pillars juxtaposed on both sides of the bridge. The lower end of the stone pillar is inserted into the groove of the cornerstone, and the upper stone pillar is pressed against the diamond walls on both sides.
The splay bridge is connected with three roads, and the south is connected with the roads on both sides of the main river in two directions. Among them, the west bank crosses the river in the south, the straight street of splay bridge is connected by stamping in the west, and the north is in a line with the east bank of the main river in the south, which is divided into two slopes.
It is located at the intersection of three streets, three rivers and four roads. The bridge is east-west, and it is a stone pillar pier bridge. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and there are two bridge opening under the second slope, which solves the complicated traffic problem.
The splayed bridge is a beam-type stone bridge with a width of 4.5 meters in bridge opening. The bridge foundations on both sides are made of large stones, and the pillars are about 4 meters high. The lower end of the bridge is inserted into the stone, and the center of the vertical groove of the column foot is used to strengthen the bridge. The stone pillars of the bridge are about 4 meters high and slightly inclined inward, so that they cling to the diamond-shaped wall behind the pillars and are very stable.
There are huge stone strips on the stone pillars of the figure-of-eight bridge, and a stone bridge is built on it. The stone bridge beam is about 4.8 meters long and has two layers of stone slabs on the outside, which are in the shape of a moon beam. The watchpost of the stone railing is engraved with the name of the donor who built the bridge.
The two sides of the splay bridge can be used for people to walk, which is also the difference between it and the bridge you usually see. The east pier of Bazi Bridge is very close to the residential building, and it is very convenient to go down the steps and communicate with the north and south along the river bank.
At the west pier of the Bazi Bridge, there are steps from the straight street of the Bazi Bridge to the main bridge, and there are also steps on the west bank of the southeast Shuangqiao Bridge. Under the steps leading to the east bank and west bank of Dongshuangqiao, there is also Liang bridge opening, because there was originally a small river crossing here.
Like the main bridge, all the steps on the pier are made of stone fences and sentries on both sides, making the whole bridge seamless.
The eight-character bridge has solved the traffic problems of residents on both sides of the strait very scientifically and practically. Such ingenious architectural conception and such a long construction period have laid the position of the splayed bridge in the history of Chinese bridges.
The real value of the figure-of-eight bridge lies in its own structure and the ingenious conception of the builder. Because the bridge was built at the intersection of Sanshui, people called it "ancient overpass" and praised it.
The layout of the splayed bridge is very distinctive. The eastern end of the bridge is paved with falling stone steps along the river from north to south. However, the two falling stone steps at both ends of the bridge are in the west and south directions respectively. This structure saves land space.
Another biggest feature of the figure-of-eight bridge is that a blue slate fiber path is specially laid on the channel crossing the river for the exclusive use of boatmen. Because of this function, it is known as the oldest overpass in China.
Because the bridge builders built this type of multi-stage bridge in this specific section with many streets and rivers, the overseas Chinese with eight characters gained an important position in the history of bridge construction in China.
This 8-shaped bridge has a wonderful structural shape. The eight-character bridge connects three roads, with water flowing from north to south, Jianhu water in the south and Hangzhou ancient canal in the north. It is one of the main waterways of Guyuecheng. The eight-character bridge is one of the symbols of Shaoxing's history and culture, and it is also a typical representative of old Shaoxing.
