The Construction History of Cliff Statue of Thousand Buddha Rock
According to stone inscriptions and related documents, thousands of Buddha statues began to shine in the third year of Tang Longshuo (663) and finally in the seventh year of Kaiyuan (720), which lasted for 57 years. * * * There are more than 3,000 statues, 6 inscriptions and 2 monuments in 54 niches, which are distributed on the front and left sides of Baisha Rock with a height of10m and a width of 53m. There are 28 niches on the front, most of which were carved in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. On the left, there are 26 niches carved in the early Tang Dynasty, most of which have weathered because no protective measures were taken before the 1990s.
