Hu Shi's statement of "punching the shop" was quietly changed to "knocking down Confucius' shop" by later generations, and it was regarded as the core spirit of the May 4th New Culture Movement. For example, before the founding of New China, Chen Boda, one of the representatives of the New Enlightenment in China, suggested the establishment of the "China New Enlightenment Society" and expressed his willingness to "accept the call of the May 4th Movement to overthrow Kongjiadian". In "On Filial Piety", he wrote: "Wu, an old hero who overthrew Kongjiadian". Historian Fan Wenlan once said in The Evolution of the History of Confucian Classics in China: "Mr. Wu Yu, one of the' great names' in the May 4th Movement, was once called the old hero who defeated Kongjiadian". Mr. He Lin, a famous scholar and expert on Hegel's thought, also said something similar to "to overthrow Mr. Hu Shi called for by Confucius" in "The New Development of Confucianism". After the founding of New China, the saying "Down with Kongjiadian" spread further. For example, in the Selected Works of the May 4th Movement compiled by the modern history of China Academy of Social Sciences, Wu Yu's annotation is as follows: "Wu Yu … was called' the old hero who overthrew the Kongjiadian' …" Mr. Kuang Yaming, an intellectual historian, called Wu Yu' the old hero who overthrew the Kongjiadian' in the Confucius Review. He Xin, a famous scholar, said in Inheritance and Transcendence of the May 4th Spirit: "It has been 70 years since Wu Yu proposed to overthrow Kongjiadian." And so on, this situation can be said to be invincible.
