1953, the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology was established, and the Political Economy Teaching and Research Department was established.

198 1, the former Huazhong Institute of Technology established the Economic Research Institute;

1983, the former Huazhong Institute of Technology established the Department of Economics and Management Engineering;

1985 The former Huazhong Institute of Technology established the School of Economics and Management, which consists of the Department of Economics, the Department of Quantitative Economics, the Department of Management Engineering and the Department of Sociology.

1988, the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology established the Economic Development Research Center;

1In April, 1994, the former School of Economics and School of Management of Huazhong University of Science and Technology were established respectively. The School of Economics consists of the former Department of Economics, the Department of Quantitative Economics and the Economic Development Research Center.

In June 2000, the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University and Wuhan Urban Construction College formed a new school, which was renamed as the School of Economics of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
