Terengganu officially became a state on 1724. Sultan Saina Abidin, one of the younger brothers of the former Sultan of Johor, became the first Sultan of Terengganu. Like other states in Malaysia, Terengganu was a traditional belief society before the introduction of Islam, and animism was mixed with Buddhism and Hinduism.
