Why did Tubo change its name to Tibet? Where did "West" and "Tibet" come from?
Today, we all call Tibet Xizang Autonomous Region Tibet, but anyone who has studied history knows that Tibet was not called by this name in ancient times, but called Tubo. Princess Wencheng and her relatives in the Tang Dynasty were Tibetan leader Songzan Gambu.

So why did you change Tubo, a historic place name, to Tibet today?

First of all, we need to know the meaning of "Fan" in the original name. There are two main interpretations of this word. The first is that people in Tibetan areas at that time were mainly hunting, so they lived in scattered places. Therefore, when they are threatened or encounter prey, they will shout for help. This kind of cry is called "Fanba", and over time they become Tubo.

The second argument is because of Tibet's special geographical environment. According to the natural conditions of the land, people call the plateau animal husbandry area a pastoral area and the lowland forestry area an agricultural area, so Tibet is in between, which is called "Fan".

Then the word "spit" in Tubo means "big" in Tibetan. Because the Tang Dynasty was called Datang, they called themselves Tubo.

Later, with the passage of time, Tubo was no longer as powerful as before, and because it was located in the west and adjacent to Qinghai Lake, it was called the "West Sea", which was the origin of the word "West" in Tibet.

As for the word "Tibetan", in Tibetan, Qinghai and other areas are called "Amdo", Qamdo and other areas are called "Kang", and people in Kangqu are called Kangba. By the Ming Dynasty, the Ming people no longer called Tibetan areas "Tubo", because of the changes in Chinese translation, Tibetan areas were simply called "Tibet". During the Kangxi period, Tibetan areas were officially renamed Tibet.
