The early gobang and Weiqi have similarities in literature and history, because ancient gobang and Weiqi are exactly the same. In ancient myths and legends, there is a saying that "Nu Wa created man and Fuxi played chess". "Zeng Shan Hai Jing" records that "there is a stone resting on the mountain, which is called the chess of the emperor platform and the quail egg with five colors."

Shan Li quoted Yi Wenzhi from The History of the Three Kingdoms Han Wei Dan Chun, saying: "There are 289 pieces of vertical and horizontal 17 chess, and each piece of white and black 150." Although this passage doesn't say what chess it is, at least we know that beautiful stones were used as chess pieces in ancient times. Therefore, the gobang with simple rules may have come at that time, and it was made of stone. There are also legends that gobang was first popular in ethnic minority areas, and then gradually evolved into Weiqi, which was circulated among Chinese descendants.

Gobang originated from the traditional Gobang. After nearly a hundred years of rule evolution, the traditional gobang has gradually become complicated.
