NATO's eastward expansion
When NATO 1949 was founded, there were 12 member countries, which increased fourfold. 1952, joined by Greece and Turkey; 1955 accession of the federal Republic of Germany; 1982 Spain became the 6th member of NATO. After the end of the Cold War, NATO decided to expand its former Warsaw Pact members in June, 5438 +0994+10. 1In March 1999, Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary joined NATO, completing NATO's first eastward expansion after the end of the Cold War. In April of the same year, the NATO Washington Summit formulated the "Joining Action Plan" and decided to continue to recruit Central and Eastern European countries to join the military group.
Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia and Slovakia will formally join NATO this year, which will increase the number of NATO members to 26.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is also called "North Atlantic Alliance" or "North Atlantic Group", or NATO for short. It is a military and political organization established by the United States in conjunction with western countries in order to maintain its hegemonic position in Europe after the war.
1949 On April 4th, the United States, Canada, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Britain, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Portugal and Italy signed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Washington and decided to establish the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. On August 24th of the same year, all countries completed the ratification procedures and the organization was formally established. Greece and Turkey formally joined the organization in February 1952, the Federal Republic of Germany in May 6 1955 and Spain in June 1982. 1996 received from Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary.
199 1 1 In February, NATO initiated the establishment of the North Atlantic Cooperation Council, which was composed of NATO countries, Yuan Hua treaty countries, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Baltic States. 1994 1 The summit held in Brussels in June unanimously adopted a plan to establish a "partnership for peace" with Central and Eastern European countries and Russia. 1In May 1997, in order to "raise the political and military cooperation between NATO and partner countries to a new level" and strengthen the security and stability in Europe and the Atlantic region, NATO countries and partner foreign ministers jointly decided to establish the Euro-North Atlantic Partnership Committee.
The purpose of the organization is for the contracting parties to exercise collective "defense", and any contracting party must give assistance, including the use of force, in case of war with other countries.
