Peking University was founded in 1898.

Peking University was founded at the time of 1898 reform and restructuring, formerly known as Shi Jing University Hall. It was the first national comprehensive university in China in modern times, and it was also the highest educational administrative organ in China at the beginning of its establishment. 19 12 changed to national Peking University. /kloc-moved to Changsha in 0/937, and formed the National Temporary University of Changsha together with the National Tsinghua University and the private Nankai University. /kloc-moved to Kunming in 0/938 and changed its name to National Southwest Associated University.

1In June, 898, Emperor Guangxu promulgated the Imperial edict, which promoted the Reform Movement of 1898. The imperial edict emphasized that "Shi Jing University Hall is advocated by all provinces, so it is better to do it first". On July 3rd, Emperor Guangxu approved the Draft Articles of Association of Shi Jing University Hall drafted by Liang Qichao, formally established Shi Jing University Hall, and appointed Sun Jianai, the official minister and co-organizer of the University Hall, as the first minister in charge of university affairs (management minister), and Ren Zhongxue, Xu Jingcheng and American missionary Ding Weiliang as the chief teachers of western learning. 1September 2, 8981day, Empress Dowager Cixi and the old guard staged a coup, and the Hundred Days Reform failed. However, the auditorium of Shi Jing University was preserved. Shi Jing University Hall was the highest institution of higher learning and the highest educational administrative organ in China at that time. Some scholars thought it was the first modern university formally established in modern China. The establishment of Shi Jing University Hall is of epoch-making significance in the modern history of China, marking the beginning of modern higher education in China. Imperial academy of Shi Jing University reformed the old imperial examination system and formulated a new academic system charter, with the aim of "rectifying the current situation and cultivating generalists", and the teaching content emphasized "Chinese style and western use" and "paying equal attention to both Chinese and western". At the beginning of its establishment, it exercised dual functions, both as the highest institution of higher learning and as the highest educational administrative organ in China, governing provincial schools.
