The Historical Origin of East Lake
Fengxiang used to be called Yongzhou in the summer, but it was changed to Fengxiang House in the Tang Dynasty. East Lake and Fengxiang have a long history. According to legend, in the first year, Ruifeng flew through Yong and drank water here, so it was named "Drinking Fengchi", which Zhou people thought was auspicious. When Su Dongpo, a great writer in the Northern Song Dynasty, served as a book signing judge in Fengxiang Building, he advocated building and expanding a drinking pool, planting slender willows and lotus roots, and building beautiful pavilions such as gentlemen's pavilions, ancient pavilions and western language pavilions. Because it is only twenty or thirty steps away from the east gate of Fucheng, it was renamed East Lake, which lasted for nearly a thousand years. Twenty years after Su Dongpo built Fengxiang East Lake, Su Dongpo built West Lake in Hangzhou. So East Lake and West Lake are called sister lakes. People say that West Lake is water and East Lake is willow.
