Why is shopping called shopping instead of buying North and South? When did this statement appear?
We often say "thing" is not only a locative word, but also seems to be a universal pronoun. For example, shopping: "shopping", swearing: "not things", items: "looking for things", and so on. Then why not use north and south?

In fact, it contains a lot of history and culture. There were strict restrictions on private commercial activities in the Tang Dynasty, and Chang 'an's commodities could only be bought and sold in the east and west markets. Out of these two places, it violated the laws at that time. Dongcheng and Xicheng are both industrial and commercial markets in Chang 'an, but because of their different locations, the types of goods they operate are slightly different. "East-West City" originated from Chang 'an in Tang Dynasty, which was very prosperous, and had a certain influence on the generation of the word "East-West City", but it did not play a leading role in Tang Dynasty.

In the Song Dynasty, although the places where people did business were no longer confined to the East and the West; Chang 'an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty and the starting point of the Silk Road, seemed to be the most populous country in the world at that time. There are two major markets in the city: "East Market" and "West Market". The "East Market" mainly serves the upper class, and the "West Market" is a civilian market, but there are also many international businessmen, and the degree of prosperity can be imagined. Ordinary businessmen often buy and sell in "East" cities. After a long time, it becomes "buying and selling things."

The word "shopping" originated in the Eastern Han Dynasty, when there were two cities, East and West. Shopping in Tokyo is called "East" and Xijing is called "West". Over time, "things" have become synonymous with commodities. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, a scholar named Goodwell Gong believed that as early as the Eastern Han Dynasty, most merchants were concentrated in Luoyang, Tokyo and Xijing Chang 'an. As the saying goes, "buy east" and "buy west". That is, buying goods in Tokyo and Xijing, over time, "things" became synonymous with goods.
