2. Historical background: Yuanmingyuan was built on the former site of a private garden given by Emperor Kangxi of the Ming Dynasty to Yin Zhen, the fourth son of Kangxi. After Yin Zhen ascended the throne of yongzheng emperor, it was expanded into a detached palace where the emperor lived for a long time. During the Qianlong period, it was expanded again and completed in the 9th year (1744).
