In A.D. 1476, 24-year-old Columbus suggested to the Portuguese king to explore the sea routes to the East Indies and China westward. At that time, many learned professors and philosophers laughed at this bold young man, saying that he could only fall into the abyss on the edge of the earth when driving westward, and his attempt to reach India and China in the east was simply a pipe dream.
Columbus believed that he was right, but without the support of the authorities, he had no boat and no money, and the plan could not be realized. 1485, he moved to Spain and continued to promote the idea of going west. Knowing that he had this ambition, the Pope had been waiting for more than ten years, so he encouraged the Queen of Spain and asked her to help Columbus. The Pope gave Columbus 65 yuan money to see the Queen. Columbus used the money to buy a suit and a donkey, but he didn't even have money to eat along the way, so he made a living by begging.
The queen and ruler of Spain gave Columbus three ships to try, but no one wanted to take risks without sailors. Columbus had no choice but to run to the seaside to hold a few people, first pleading, and then persuading them to agree to go together. He also asked the Queen to release the condemned prisoners and promised that if they sailed successfully, they would be free.
1On August 3rd, 492, 42-year-old Columbus finally led 87 sailors and set sail from Barros Port in three ships. They struggled with the stormy waves, experienced thousands of difficulties and dangers, crossed the Atlantic Ocean and reached the Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti and other islands. After that, Columbus led the fleet westbound for Jamaica, Puerto Rico and other islands and the coastal areas of Central America and South America at 1493, 1498 and 1502 respectively. At that time, he mistakenly thought that this was Asia. It was not until his death that he knew that this was a "new continent" that had never been known. Therefore, some islands in the Caribbean are still called the West Indies.
Such a big America was unknown to the world at that time. Therefore, people say that Columbus discovered the "New World". Although Columbus never traveled around the world once, for hundreds of years, his adventurous spirit of opening up new routes has always inspired and inspired people to explore the unknown world.
